GROSS AND BRILLIANT

Sometimes it's just a joy to surf the internet and find all sorts of creativity blossoming. I found this about 20 minutes ago and instantly fell in love with its dry wit and bizarre, yet surprisingly on-the-mark, sensibilities. And now, you too can feel the love. Just point your browser to the web address below and behold:

"FIVE WAYS TO LOVE A COCKROACH."

CAN MOVIES HELP CHANGE THE WORLD?

YES. THEY CAN.

And if you live in the Southern California area, you can find out just how by going to see THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS. This landmark masterpiece of docudrama realism BLEW ME OFF THE PLANET when I saw the first time (about two months ago when TiVo caught it one night on TCM or IFC at three in the morning...). Now you have a chance to see it on THE BIG SCREEN.

ALGIERS screens at the American Cinematheque's Egyptian Theatre on Sunday, May 31st at 7:30. What's it about? I'll let the Cinematheque folks tell you all about it:

In conjunction with the exhibition at the Getty Research Institute (May 19-October 18) "Walls of Algiers: Narratives of the City", join us for the screening:

BATTLE OF ALGIERS, 1966, Rialto Pictures, 121 min. The Algerian struggle for independence is presented in a compelling, ultra-realistic style by director Gillo Pontecorvo in this landmark 1965 docudrama. Refusing to make villains of either the colonialist French or the bomb-throwing rebels, Pontecorvo weaves a morally complex, dramatically riveting tapestry that presents a balanced yet passionate view of revolution. Frances Terpak, Senior Collections Curator of Getty Research Institute, will introduce the screening.

If you live anywhere near LA, GO SEE THIS MOVIE. You will never look at the modern day "war on terror" or our involvement in Iraq and Vietnam the same again.

And if you don't live in LA, RENT or NETFLIX this movie ASAP. You won't regret it... it's a powerful, truly moving experience.

THE SOUNDS OF SHADOWS

Hey, folks... check out this month's issue of GEEK MONTHLY magazine.

That's right, the Summer Fun Issue (June 2009) has an article on the new DARK SHADOWS audio dramas from Big Finish Productions. In addition to cool pictures of Barnabas and Quentin, you also get interview quotes from yours shamelessly.

That's right!

Now you can learn exactly how my love of all-things-DS began, as well as how I made a fool of myself in order to live out my dream of writing for the Collins family.

What's that -- you STILL haven't bought THE WICKED AND THE DEAD? Well, there's no time like the present. Just point your browser to the web link below and all shall be rectified.

COMING SOON

Check out this gorgeous splash page by brilliant Italian artist Fabrizio Fiorentino from INK #1.

Of course, I don't need to tell you that FINAL CRISIS AFTERMATH:INK #1 hits stands next week on May 27th. Naw... you already knew that. But just in case you needed something more to make you run out and buy the book the day it comes out (next Wednesday at your local comics dealer, HINT... HINT...), let Fabrizio's gorgeous art serve as a reminder.

INK follows the adventures of Mark Richards aka THE TATTOOED MAN. Formerly a super-villain, Mark was recently made an honorary member of the JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA for his courage during the recent FINAL CRISIS storyline and the battle against Darkseid and his Anti-Life Justifiers. Now, he's trying on the mantle of "hero" for a change, and boy, is it different. It's fun. Hard. Weird. Awesome. Difficult. Gratifying. Exasperating. Inspiring. A pain in the butt. And of course... COOL!

As for the what actually happens next? You'll have to check it out. INK is a six-issue miniseries, and trust me... you won't believe what's in store for Mark and the residents of Liberty Hill, the community he's sworn to protect.

Needless to say, being a superhero isn't as easy as it seems...

KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE

So I went to see STAR TREK this weekend (it ROCKED!!!!!) and one of the trailers before the movie was for G.I. JOE.

Now I never watched the cartoons or read the comics when I was younger (don't ask me why...), but man! That trailer looks AWESOME. I'm soooooo gonna go see that movie. But when I do, the TAG SCENE after the credits better be a parody of one of these original PSAs.

Why?

Because KNOWING is half the battle.

One question, though.

WHAT'S THE DAMN OTHER HALF?!!!
