THE TRUTH ABOUT BARNABAS COLLINS

JOHNNY DEPP is at it again. This time, he and Tim Burton are taking on my all-time favorite TV show, DARK SHADOWS. There's already been a lot of chatter amongst fandom about Depp's appearance, i.e. "his version" of Barnabas Collins. (Or is it Burton's version?) Yes, those first leaked photos looked rather odd and worried a lot of folks. But now OFFICIAL photos are out and I must say THEY LOOK AWESOME.

For those who don't know, Barnabas Collins is a 200-year old vampire who turns up in Collinsport, Maine in the 1960s (or apparently the 1970s in the new movie). He passes himself off as a long-lost cousin of the town's residents, the rich and powerful Collins family. Then he proceeds to drain them of their blood. The cows, too, but that's a long story. Now the conflicted Barnabas doesn't like feeding off family members. He's a reluctant vampire and an overall nice guy, and involuntary exsanguination is just plain rude. But a vampire's gotta do what a vampire's gotta do. So bloody-romantic-sexy-gothic mayhem ensues.

As I wait impatiently for (hopefully) my favorite movie of 2012 [Sorry AVENGERS, PROMETHEUS, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, and SKYFALL] to arrive in theaters May 12th... I've also been reading about how Depp wants to create a "classic horror movie monster" with his version of Barnabas. And judging from the photo above, he's succeeding. But what I've also noticed--which is something you folks might be interested to know--is that Johnny is drawing upon some very specific movie monsters from the past to create this creepy new take on Barnabas. Which ones? From what I can tell, the two biggest influences appear to be BELA LUGOSI (from Universal's 1931 English version of DRACULA)...

...and, yup, KLAUS KINSKI from German master-filmmaker WERNER HERZOG's 1979 remake of NOSFERATU.

Now you're probably thinking, "Yeah, I can get behind the Bela Lugosi influence, dude. But that Klaus Kinski-thing is just weird."

Think about it this way, folks. Aside from being one kick-ass actor, Depp is clearly a student of film history. So we can be pretty confident that he knows all about Bela's place in horror circles, and how his take on 'Dracula' defined the role long before Lee, Langella, or Oldman came around. But have you seen DEAD MAN or THE BRAVE? Whether he's acting or directing, Depp always demonstrates a clear penchant for art and foreign film-esque tastes. Which, I'm guessing, means he's seen FITZCARRALDO and a ton of other Kinski classics. In fact, now that I'm thinking about it, Kinski's notoriously intense and wholly-immersive style and approach to his roles feels a lot like Depp's approach to acting. Both men are masters at creating hyper-real characters, and then imbuing them with a grounded verisimilitude that causes audiences to care... no matter how outrageous the role. Is Depp a Klaus Kinski devotee? How the heck should I know? I've never spoken to the guy. But if I was a bettin' man, then I'd say that at the very least Kinski's past performance is on his (and Burton's) radar. I'd also bet that he and Burton probably screened the '79 (and 1922?) versions of NOSFERATU before diving headlong into the crashing waves of Collinsport.

Oh, and for the record, I LOVE Herzog's '79 remake of the Murnau masterpiece. Both the English AND German versions. I remember seeing them as a kid and being creeped out of my mind! But I digress...

The point is, if you want a preview of what the new Barnabas Collins might look and sound like in action, go back and watch Bela and Klaus' definitive performances. They might give you a leg up when DARK SHADOWS (2012) hits the big screen this summer.

Oh, and since this IS a Tim Burton flick, that means the Prince of Darkness himself--CHRISTOPHER LEE--is probably going to have a small role in the new film. That makes this the perfect time to add that the 1958 Hammer version, HORROR OF DRACULA, is my personal all-time favorite Dracula movie. It's also, without question, one of the 10 greatest horror films ever made.

And since I know that Herr Burton loves Hammer flicks (have you seen SLEEPY HOLLOW?!), get ready for a ton o' blood in this new DS movie. I'm guessing it'll make HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS look like a Disney cartoon. And if you've seen the climactic finale of HODS, then you know that's saying something.

One final note on that initial Johnny Depp/Barnabas Collins picture up top. LOOK AT JOHNNY'S HAND.

Look at the expressiveness. The meticulous quality of using digits to convey an added air of the bizarre and the disturbing. Spidery finger gestures? Check. Creepy pointed fingernails? Check. Why is this pertinent? Because throughout cinematic history, classic vampires always have creepy, spidery hands. And the great ones almost always have those pointed claws (Lee's Dracula excepted). The hands and fingers are always used to convey the vampire's power and control of his or her victims in these films. I guess having claws adds an extra exclamation point. Or maybe it just looks cool. Either way, check out the finger action (!) in the Lugosi pix below. Even though his pointed nails aren't present (like they are in the earlier photo up top), it's all about Lugosi channeling his vampiric power through those spidery digits.

And Kinski's talons? Yup, they're...

...a sinister and direct homage to Max Schreck and F.W. Murnau (another one of my all-time favorite directors), the originators of the wacky-pointed-fingerclaw-manicure. In fact, it's such a grand tradition...

...that even Gary Oldman gets into the act in Francis Ford Coppola's deliriously enjoyable BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA (1992).

Talon-mania has trickled down to the small screen, too. Dig the claws on Mark Metcalf's "Master" from Joss Whedon's eternally-cool BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER.

So yes, Depp is carrying on an expressive horror-acting tradition for the ages. It's one that director Tim Burton is also obviously in tune with, as exemplified by the production photo below. In fact, it might be Burton's meticulous attention to detail that is driving all of this adherence to a lovable, nail-biting trope. Again, I'm just speculating here. At the end of the day, only Burton, Depp, and Hollywood make-up folks know the real skinny.

Okay.

Since I should actually stop procrastinating now and go finish writing a script of my own, I ask you, "Do you actually need more reasons to go see this movie?" Didn't think so. So until May 2012 arrives, do your homework and watch some darn vampire movies. It's homework to die for.

MISTER TERRIFIC LOSES BATTLE WITH MAYAN CALENDAR

The world will end this year according to the Mayan calendar, which is apparently enough to make LA's superhero MISTER TERRIFIC hang up his T-Mask this May. When asked what he'll be doing for the remainder of the year, The Terrific One replied, "Partying like it's '1999.'" (Apparently, that was a very good year for him.)

SERIOUSLY THOUGH, FOLKS...

Yes, in case you haven't heard the news by now, MISTER TERRIFIC from DC Comics has been cancelled. Bummer, right? Yeah, I know. But these things happen. The reason is purely economic. Of course, if every one of you went out and bought 10,000 copies each of issues 6, 7, & 8, DC might change its mind. Ready? Set? GO.

(cue me patiently waiting)

Right. I can't afford to buy that many copies either. So no worries folks! The good news is that there are still THREE MORE groovy issues to come. In fact, here's a bit of a preview of our next issue:

ISSUE #6: "Cold Hearted"... is our special Valentine's Day issue! In it, we get to meet one of Mister Terrific's old flames, witness a changing of the guard at Holt Industries, and travel to the glacial outback of Iceland for a titanic battle between our hero and an awesome new villain called THE TOMORROW THIEF, who--by the way--speaks French fluently.

Will I miss the book? You bet. But you know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men. For this reason, starting next month, I'll be taking a few moments to share some behind-the-scenes stuff with you. This book was always a labour (yeah, I love the English spelling better, so THERE!) of love, and I think there are some "making-of" moments that you'll enjoy. Call it a "peek into the process" of sorts. And last, but certainly not least...

Not only does our hero meet the villainous alien race known as THE KRYL, he also finds himself thrown into outer space. (Actually, it's the ninth dimension...) Yes, after an initial 3-part story set primarily in his home base of Los Angeles, Mister Terrific goes COSMIC. Cool, eh? Of course, you might be asking yourself, "Uh... why leave the cozy confines of the City of Angels to set a story in dimensional space?"

Good question, friends.

The answer is... JACK KIRBY. The King's cosmically-inspired artwork in books like FANTASTIC FOUR (Galactus, anyone? Or the Silver Surfer?) just blew me away as a kid. Same goes for THE ETERNALS and later, KAMANDI. (Okay, Kamandi's not cosmic, but it is ridiculously AWESOME.) By setting Mister Terrific's HQ in the ninth dimension, I immediately knew we'd have opportunities to tell some far-out stories. Issus #4's story, "Exposed," is the first. In it, you'll get aliens galore, action, incredible interstellar artwork from the brilliant GIANLUCA GUGLIOTTA, and maybe even get a few clues of things to come in our hero's future.

EXAMINER DIGS LA'S NEWEST SUPERHERO

The City of Angels has a new protector. His name is Michael Holt, but you might know him better as MISTER TERRIFIC.

Launched as part of DC Comics "NEW 52" initiative back in September, the series is now on its groovy 3rd issue. I write it, but you already knew that, right? Excellent. But unless you've already picked up the book, you don't know that issue 3 is a turning point for the character of Mister Terrific. Inspired by another issue 3 from my childhood featuring an uber-famous superhero (can you guess which?), this is the issue where Mister Terrific's Achilles' heel is revealed. Where cracks in that perfect facade begin to show. Where the truth about his past comes back to haunt him in spades. Hence the title of the story, "Haunted."

Not only does it conclude the initial 3-part conflict between Mister Terrific and the creepy bad guy Brainstorm.... but this is also the issue where Mister Terrific's first COSMIC adventure begins. Yes, it's only in the coda -- the real space-fun gets underway in issues #4 & #5 -- however, it's an issue where one villain is defeated, only to reveal an even greater villain hiding in our hero's midst. But is that villain hiding somewhere in the Ninth Dimension or within Michael Holt's own conflicted consciousness? Sorry, no spoilers here. You'll just have to read MT3 to get the first clues as to the real answer. BTW: the answer to this question informs the soul-searching dynamic which plays out between our hero, some very nasty aliens called THE KRYL and some amazing new friends he'll meet over the course of our next few issues.

And it all begins here in MISTER TERRIFIC #3, "Haunted," on sale now from DC COMICS. I'll also add that had a blast writing this yarn and have been waiting patiently to share it with you all for months. I hope you enjoy it! It's a story that means a lot to both me and our hero. Oh, and stay tuned. Because after this, things REALLY GET WEIRD.

HANGING AT COMIKAZE 2011

Hopefully you made it out to LA's first annual COMIKAZE EXPO this weekend at the LA Convention Center. If you did, you got to talk about DC COMICS and THE NEW 52 with me, Jason from EMERALD KNIGHTS (Burbank's newest comic book & gaming paradise!), and a host of DC writers & artists. If you didn't, here are a few photos to get you in the mood for next year. That's me (pictured above) with JOSHUA ("I, Vampire," "Last of the Greats") FIALKOV and BRIAN ("The Flash") BUCCELLATO.

I got to join a DOCTOR WHO panel at the last minute featuring Jessica the Comic Book Girl, Who-expert Eric Hoffman, and Aaron Cistrelli, president of The Time Meddlers of Los Angeles. And yes, this CYBERMAN approved!

And of course, the crowd entering the main floor on Saturday morning...

FINDING EARL... AGAIN

So you want to be a professional writer. Cool. I have just one question: What inspires you?

Only you can answer that question. But I can tell you how it relates to the picture of that scruffy old guy above. First, let me tell you what's been inspiring me lately.

DEADLINES.

Sadly, that's often the life of a professional writer. Yes, we write because we're fortunate enough to be in a position to do so. But more and more we do it because someone's breathing down our necks, telling us that pages are due or that period-space-military-teen-sex-comedies are selling now so why don't we just "crank one of those puppies out" in order to make a quick buck? Now don't get me wrong. It's wonderful to be busy and to be in position where someone actually thinks you're capable of providing written material that doesn't suck. But like all jobs, even writing things you enjoy can--at times--become a (gasp!) grind. Why? Because of those pesky deadlines. They. Just. Never. Stop.

So what inspires you?

WAIT. I know you think you have the right answer. But let me finish first...

When you--Mr. or Ms. Professional Writer--get stuck in this particular grind and begin to write ONLY towards your deadlines, your creativity will suffer. But hey, you've got bills to pay, right? I know I do. So you push forward to keep your head above water. But soon you realize, amidst all this Hollywood splendor, that you are writing only for the deadlines... and not for yourself. That's when creative types can get into big trouble. It's also why I had been feeling like crap for the last few weeks leading up to Halloween. That changed this morning, thanks to a man named Earl.

Usually when I wake up, I try to get to my writing desk by 9:30am. It's my "routine." This morning I just didn't want to write, because I knew I had--yup, you guessed it--another deadline staring me in the face. So what did I do? I stayed in bed and watched an episode of THE TWILIGHT ZONE called "The Hunt." For those of you who haven't seen it, it's a simple tale about an aged farmer who dies while trying to rescue his dog from drowning. [SPOILER ALERT!!!] When he wakes up, he almost ends up in Hell. But with the help of the dog whose life he saved, the farmer eventually finds his way to Heaven. [END OF SPOILAGE.] Sounds a bit cheesy, I'll admit. But it's an absolutely beautiful piece of drama, wonderfully shot and acted, and brilliantly written by future WALTONS creator Earl Hamner.

Well, sitting there watching this episode, it occurred to me that someone--Earl in this case--could have only written something this touching, this heartfelt and emotionally moving, by connecting with his own passions. And by that, I don't mean his passion for the TV medium. I mean his passion for country folks and the world they inhabit, as well as the unique kind of wisdom they possess. (Sure enough, my suspicions were confirmed when I heard Earl himself say as much afterward on the commentary track for the episode). It was Earl's passion for Appalachian milieus and sensibilities--or rather his absolute compassion towards them--that I was responding to. Earl's passion moved me. The result? One tired scribe got inspired again.

Okay. Now you can say what inspires you to write. But don't tell me. Tell it to yourself. That's what matters most.

And that's the point I want to drive home for you, the aspiring writer or budding creative type or grizzled Hollywood veteran feeling burdened by deadlines. When you hit a roadblock of any kind--and don't worry, you will--remember why you wanted to write in the first place. And no matter how successful you become, never forget how important it is to continually rediscover the things you're passionate about. And to write about them. Not only will this make for better TV, movies, comic books, videogames, etc., but you just might help out a fellow writer somewhere down the line. Remember, passionate material creates its own fans. It also helps keep the creative spirit alive... for everyone, not just its creator. That's something professionals have to remember, too. And if we do forget, hopefully there is a brilliant, fifty-year-old TV show out there that will remind us.

I'm back in LA and exhausted from all the fun at this year's NEW YORK COMIC CON. Thanks to all the great fans who came out! I had a blast talking comics (and football!) all weekend. Here are a few photos from NYCC 2011. Above is the view of the Empire State Building as you look directly down 34th street from the Javits Center.

Next is the geeky madness on the main floor. I don't know what the actual attendence figures are, but it was packed! Especially on Saturday. Oh, and I saw SNL's Fred Armisten on Sunday. Guess he's a geek, too.

JERICHO RETURNS TO THE TITANS

Yes, Titans fans. You read that correctly. Jericho will be coming back to the pages of TITANS. It's all part of this summer's big Titans storyline, "THE METHUSELAH IMPERATIVE," which begins with PART ONE this July in the TITANS ANNUAL #1. The picture above is the cover for TITANS #37, which is PART TWO. This storyline, which will change the Titans forever, concludes in TITANS #38, which will feature more guest stars.

WONDERCON... DAY 2

It's my second day here at San Francisco's most excellent WONDERCON, and I must say to anyone thinking of going next year... JUST DO IT. It's just like the San Diego Comic Con, only smaller and less insane. Which means there are no long lines, but still tons of stuff to do. Plus downtown SF is just gorgeous.

Now I've seen a TON of costumes this weekend, most of them far more revealing than the three guys pictured above. But these are my favorites at WonderCon so far. Why? Did I mention I'm a THOR nut? Well, while I'm excited about the upcoming movie... it's the original Thor comics I read as a kid that are closest to my heart. And the guys pictured above have captured that childhood perfectly.

VOLSTAGG, HOGUN, and FANDRAL (from left to right) or THE WARRIORS THREE as they are known to old school Marvel fans are essentially Thor's POSSE in Asgard. They won't look like this in the Thor movie that comes out this May. This is what their original costumes looked like, i.e. the ones I grew up with and still LOVE. So kudos to some fellow fans for showing up with the Old School Asgardian Love.

I have not read GAME OF THRONES or any of the books in George R.R. Martin's fantasy series. But man, I am soooooo excited to watch the show on HBO in a couple of weeks. So when I found out THE actual "throne" was here at WonderCon and you could sit in it and get your picture taken, I jumped at the chance. That's Yours Truly below holding court at the HBO booth.

And although I wasn't on it, today's DC UNIVERSE PANEL was great. Hilarious, but great. Great because look at who was on it:

That's (from left to right) super-editor EDDIE BERGANZA, genius "Titans" artist PHILIP TAN, and brilliant writers MARV "Teen Titans" WOLFMAN, JUDD "JL: Generation Lost" WINICK, and JAMES "Starman," "JLA" ROBINSON. I say the panel was hilarious because there was so much the panelists COULDN'T REVEAL about what's coming up in the DCU. But what Marv could finally reveal is that the long-awaited TEEN TITANS original graphic novel that he and George Perez have been working on for 20+ years is DONE. Look for it to hit shelves September 2011.

WONDERCON PRESENTS... GREEN LANTERN

Cool logo, eh?

Well I had to wait in line with about 6,000 other people for WB's special GREEN LANTERN MOVIE PRESENTATION, but thankfully we all (I hope!) managed to get in. Was it worth it?

HELL, YEAH.

My boss aka superstar comic writer GEOFF JOHNS kicked things off... pumping up the crowd, then unveiling several minutes of BRAND NEW FOOTAGE. People, OA LOOKS TOTALLY BADASSED! Seriously, there's so much alien-VFX that the movie looks like a STAR WARS film at times (and I mean that in the GOOD way...).

But in addition to cool visual effects, the new scenes contained a wonderful combination of SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE grandeur and IRON MAN-esque humor. Needless to say, I'm soooooooooooooo PUMPED to see this movie now. I really think summer movie fans are gonna love this one. And comic fans, YOU'RE GONNA FREAK OUT.

After the new footage and massive applause from 6,000+ geeks, Geoff introduced the stars of the movie. First up... BLAKE LIVELY.

Now I don't watch GOSSIP GIRL, so I really didn't know what to expect from her. But she came across as humble, charming, and funny... so this bodes well. However...

...RYAN REYNOLDS STOLE THE SHOW.

But then why aren't you surprised? I love this dude! I dug him in THE AMITYVILLE HORROR. He was cool in BLADE: TRINITY. So as soon as it was announced he would play Hal Jordon, I was already on board. Now, having listened to him talk about his experience filming the movie, getting to know the character, and his hopes for future Green Lantern movies, I gotta say I think he's the perfect choice. Just like Robert Downey, Jr. MADE Iron Man his own, I think Ryan has the ability to do the same with GL.

Can't wait for June 17th.

WONDERCON 2011... THE FUN BEGINS

DAY ONE is already underway here at San Francisco's WonderCon and hopefully you're already here! What's that? YOU'RE NOT? Well, there's still time as the festivities run through Sunday. So if you the Northern California, come on down!

As you can see, there's a cool DOCTOR WHO presence here this year. I'm looking forward to hearing the Who panel on Sunday and hear superscribe NEIL GAIMAN talk about his episode.

I was also on today's DC NATION PANEL with number DC big wigs, including Dan DiDio, JT Krul, Frank Quietly, Francis Manipul, and Len Wein to name a few. Unfortunately, I couldn't take a picture of myself... so I took one of the DC logo on the big screen after the panel was over. But good news: the panel is being rebroadcast on Sirius/XM, so you'll be able to catch it at some point. Just wish I'd actually said something impressive, because--sadly--I did not. Oh, well!

There were a few Osiris, Titans, & Black Adam fans in the audience, which was encouraging. Thanks to those folks for coming out and supporting TITANS & SHAZAM.

PLAYER AFFINITY NAMES TITANS BEST COMIC BOOK OF 2010

When someone tweeted me yesterday with the message "Congrats on the Award," my initial response was... "What award?" Enter... Player Affinity, a cool website with a major geek love of all things pop culture. Including comic books.

Yesterday Player Affinity announced their Comic Awards. (Click on the title of this post and you'll be taken to the entire list.) Winners include Stan Lee & BOOM! Studios, Jonathan Hickman (one of my favorite writers these days) & his great FANTASTIC FOUR run, and Grant Morrison & David Finch's awesome BATMAN: THE RETURN 1-SHOT. Oh, and the TITANS: VILLAINS FOR HIRE SPECIAL #1.

Whoa.

Now that's quite a list of heavy hitters who created some truly awesome comics this year. And then there's me. Not so heavy. In fact, a comic newbie. To be part of the team that created a book mentioned in this kind of company is an incredible honor. Period. So THANKS Player Affinity -- we're going to continue bringing you the best book we can in 2011.

Yeah, I know it's a bit far in advance, but it's never too late for geeks to plan a good comic convention sojourn. EWROTE ON THE NEW DARK SHADOWS FILM

Anyone who knows me also knows that I am the world's biggest DARK SHADOWS fanatic. And I use the word "fanatic" very deliberately. Just how much of a DS enthusiast am I? Let me provide the following DS geek credentials as proof:

1.I've seen every DS episode (all 1225!) multiple times, as I usually watch the entire series from beginning to end about every 2-3 years.

2. I've memorized more dialogue from DS than I have from STAR TREK, STAR WARS, and THE X-FILES combined.

3. I have autographed photos of almost all the DS stars, both living and deceased. (Sadly, I never got to meet the late-great Grayson Hall...).

4. Way back in screenwriting school, the 2nd story outline I ever wrote was for a DS TV movie. (Believe it or not... the 1st thing I wrote was an outline for an episode of FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE SERIES. No, that's not a typo.)

5. After watching my first produced screenplay (a Season Two EUREKA episode), my proudest geek moment was the recording and release of my first Big Finish DS audio drama, "The Wicked and the Dead (available at AMAZON.COM or BIGFINISHPRODUCTIONS.COM)."

6. I have pretty much every piece of DS collectible memorabilia that exists, just some of which includes: all the Marilyn Ross novels, both Milton Bradley board games, the ultra-rare DS VIEWMASTER reels, original DS trading cards from the 60s, all the Gold Key comics--how about those new hardcover reprints? Nice, eh?--and of course a Josette's music box. And that's just the more well-known stuff. (DS cookbook, anyone? YUP. MINE.)

7. I even did a book report on Barnabas Collins in the 3rd grade.

SIDEBAR: Sometimes I think 2nd generation fans are more fanatical than 1st generation ones because we spend so much time recreating something we weren't around to fully appreciate during it's initial run (I became a devotee of the show in the early-to-mid-80s when it was rerun on PBS stations). It's as if we have to make up for the lack of 1st Gen experience by battering everyone with our fanatical 2nd Gen ability to uncover facts, anecdotes, and memorabilia our older counterparts never knew about (or in the case of memorabilia--couldn't afford). That in somehow possessing these things we balance an enormous imaginary geek scale that infinitely favors 1st Gen fans via one simple fact: they were alive to discover the thing we all love first hand and we weren't. Which those of us who have older siblings know makes the 1st Gen folks COOLER than us in some pioneering way.

Dammit, I want a time machine NOW.

Yes, the one thing a 2nd Gen fan can never do is turn back time. Just ask Cher. We are, however, the ones who carry the genre torch into subsequent generations, thereby creating a fandom market that wouldn't have existed otherwise and which allows the genre product--in this case, DS itself--to thrive beyond its original lifespan and find pop culture immortality. (So take THAT... all you DS fans were old enough to actually run home from school. I can use an iPad. Can you?!)

BUT BACK TO OUR TOPIC: THE NEW DS MOVIE IN 2011

So now the news is out that Tim Burton & Johnny Depp are going to do a big budget feature film of my all-time favorite show. Are they going to screw it up? Is Tim Burton too weird to get the romantic aspects of the show? Will the involvement of a mega-studio-marketing-machine turns my childhood fantasies into modern day, plotless CGI garbage? And what's my two-cents on all this?

Glad you asked.

I think it's AWESOME.

Folks, I'm a huge fan of the original show, but for the DS world to continue to grow... it must be reinterpreted for a new generation of fans. The fact that vampire flicks are uber-vogue nowadays makes the timing perfect for a "mature" vampire romance tale. And sadly by mature I mean over the age of sixteen. (But I'll save that for another posting...) So, yeah, I can't wait for this movie to blow up in theaters next year.

FACT: DARK SHADOWS ORIGINATED THE ROMANTIC VAMPIRE GENRE. PERIOD. And it did so waaaaay back in 1967. That's about forty years before TWILIGHT and thirty years before BUFFY, THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (another one of my favorite shows). Of course it's about 70 years after Stoker's original DRACULA novel, so maybe I'll stop while I'm ahead...

DS IN A NUTSHELL: DARK SHADOWS is the continuing story of Barnabas Collins, a fallible human being who--because of a conflicted heart and conscience--is doomed to suffer the curse of vampirism for all eternity.

And most tragically of all, it's not Barnabas who suffers the most, but rather those who love him: his fiance--the beautiful and innocent Josette (above, getting kissed)--and the wicked but vulnerable sorceress Angelique Blouchard. What these three characters go through over four-plus seasons of DS continues to break hearts and inspire fandom more than 40 years after its initial airing. So with such rich characters and a great storyline to use as a starting point (no spoilers here -- just Google Dark Shadows for a complete synopsis), I'm pumped that a great filmmaker like Burton will get the opportunity to run with it and make something special even more elegant, sumptuous, and epic than any vampire movie we'll seen in decades. (Probably since Coppola's BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA...)

EWROTE GOES FAN GIRL: Johnny Depp is the the perfect casting for the role of Barnabas Collins. He's got the dark, brooding, and unconventional good looks to essay the visual essence of actor Jonathan Frid's original portrayal. Plus, since he's already a fan of the show, he'll know how to mine the complexities of Barnabas's human side, as well as the immortal one. Plus, the guy's one helluva actor!

The other big reason I'm excited for Burton & Depp to team up on Dark Shadows? It's a little movie called SLEEPY HOLLOW. Dude and dudettes, that movie was FRAKKIN' BADASSED. It was soooo obviously an homage to HAMMER HORROR movies (apparently Burton and I have the same excellent taste and influences), and was done perfectly. Cinematography? Brilliant. Mood? Spot one. Charm? Yup, got that, too. And gore? Heh. Nailed that!

Yes, Mr. Burton... I totally noticed that Michael Gambon's impaling was a perfect updating of Chris Lee's death moment at the end of Hammer's DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE. Bravo!

Now I know what you're thinking: "Hey, Ewrote. You're a screenwriter. Aren't you worried the script will suck? YES AND NO. Yes, because that's always a legitimate fear in a business where commerce comes before art. No, because top-notch scribe John August has been working on the early drafts. And that dude can write. Also, the new guy they've brought it to take things over the finish line--Seth Graham Smith--wrote a groovy little book called ABRAHAM LINCOLN, VAMPIRE HUNTER--so he's clearly got the right sensibilities to help update DS for the baroque tastes of 21st Century geeks.

So, yeah. I'm already beyond pumped for this flick. Please let there be a midnight showing at the Cinerama Dome for this, oh Movie Godz!

Finally, I have to ask my own inner geek if there are any things I'd like to see in this movie. Things that need to happen in order for it to be a true DARK SHADOWS flick. Yeah, there are a few things. In no particular order, any good DS adaptation must have:

1. COLLINWOOD as a CHARACTER.

Collinwood is the name of the creepy estate where the Collins Family lives. But it's more than a building, it's an enormous atmospheric setting for all the show's spooky goings-on that reflects the emotions and attitudes of the characters themselves. Think of it as the HEATH in Thomas Hardy's RETURN OF THE NATIVE. So any new DS flick needs to treat Collinwood like a new starship "Enterprise" in a STAR TREK movie. It must look beyond awesome, be on full display throughout the flick, play a key role in the story, and--and this is the most important thing--evoke a specific mood, atmosphere, and thematic unity for the picture. Oh, and it should also be the ultimate spooky haunted house.

2. TIME TRAVEL as a part of the PLOT.

DS storylines are best known for traveling back in time, specifically to the years 1795, 1897, and 1840. Remember on BUFFY and ANGEL when they would flashback to see how Angelus was made into a vampire? Yeah, that was all done 30 years earlier on DARK SHADOWS. Seeing all the actors in highly-detailed, exquisite period 1795 costumes should be a no-brainer for someone of Burton's caliber, so I'm not worried here. The only question is, how much of this new DS will take place in the present vs. the past? My vote? 50-50. Start off in the present for Act 1, spend all of Act 2 in 1795, then come back to the present for Act 3. But again, I'm not the screenwriter of the movie, so I'll let them surprise me.

3. THE LOVE TRIANGLE

I've already mentioned this before, so I won't belabor the point. DS is about a guy who falls in love with one woman, then unfairly dumps her for another. So the first woman--who just happens to be a WITCH--gets back at the guy's assholeishness (that is so not a word, but who cares) and puts a curse on him for all eternity. See how all the supernatural jazz is really wrapped around a romantic love story core?

If Barnabas had just been honest with Angelique (that's her above in 1795 garb), she wouldn't have turned him into a vampire. Of course, turning someone into a creature of the night is a rather large overreaction at getting spurned. It's not like Angelique's smoking hot and could've have just found another guy, someone who would treat her a lot better (me).

Oh, and did I mention that rich Josette's maid, was also, you guessed, Angelique? Clearly, there are socio-economic jealousy issues wrapped up in Josette and Angelique's relationship... especially when Barnabas dumps the maid and announces his engagement to her mistress, the wealthy heiress Josette. HA! It's all such great soapy goodness I get goosebumps just thinking about the first time I watched the original episodes. It was all so weird, yet familiar, AND surprising at the same time. And all set against a world of magic and time travel. Sounds like a great idea for a movie, right?

Yeah, I think so, too.

TITANS #29 - OUT NOW

The "Family Reunions" arc continues in TITANS #29, which is out today. It's BATMAN vs. DEATHSTROKE in an all-out battle, plus we learn more about the mysterious Allegra Garcia... a young Hispanic lady with a very bad attitude towards authority. Also, the rest of the Titans continue their battle with Batman's Rogues Gallery, including MR. FREEZE, CLAYFACE, and KILLER CROC.

It's Part 2 of a 5-part story that builds up to the surprising events in TITANS #31 & 32 that will change the team forever. Seriously. I know, because I'm writing the scripts. Speaking of which, I should probably get back to work now...

LONG BEACH COMIC CON THIS WEEKEND

Love comic books and have nothing to do this weekend? Then come on out to the LONG BEACH COMIC CON. There's still one day left--Sunday, Oct. 31st-- and since it's HALLOWEEN there's tons of fun to be had AND a costume contest for the kids.

I was down there today buying goodies and talking with a bunch of great folks. I also had the privilege of participating in the first of two DC NATION panels. Joining me was Batgirl artist DUSTIN NGUYEN, as well as fellow writers JT KRUL (Teen Titans, Green Arrow), and BRYAN Q MILLER (Batgirl, TV's Smallville). A great time was had by all! Not only did we learn that Dustin is a major TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES geek, but JT, Bryan, and myself shared writing tips with the audience.

Bummed you missed out? Don't be. If you live in the Southern California area, come on down to the LBCC tomorrow. There will be a second DC NATION PANEL tomorrow, hosted by our fearless leader himself, DAN DIDIO (schedule permitting). Should be a blast!

EW INTERVIEW ON DIVERSITY IN COMIC BOOKS

If you know me, you know I love what I do -- whether it's writing comic books, TV shows, audio dramas, movies, videogames, or whatever... I just love telling stories. Especially genre stories.

But addition to loving all-things horror/sci-fi-/fantasy/action oriented, I'm also African-American. What happens when a Black writer takes on pop culture? If you're reading TITANS, then you're already seeing it in action. A diverse team dealing with issues, both dark and light (although let's face... more DARK!), while trying to make sense of this journey we call life. If you watch EUREKA, then you must know how proud I am to work on a show with such a wonderfully diverse cast. It's also a show where an interracial romance (Carter and Allison) is no big deal. It's just, you know, LOVE. And that's groovy, eh?

Anyway, last weekend at SDCC, Arturo R. Garcia interviewed me for his wonderful blog, RACIALICIOUS.COM -- the result is a frank and wonderful discussion about diversity in comic books, as well as (hopefully!) a bit of insight into what it's like to be a writer of color in a major pop culture medium. BACK FROM COMIC CON 2010

I'm still exhausted from attending this year's massive SAN DIEGO COMIC CON. Then why am I missing it already? Maybe it's because I had so much fun signing comic books and meeting all you groovy folks. That's the big DC COMICS booth (above). Thanks to all you TITANS fans who came by!

But as some of you also might know, I also work on this little show called EUREKA. And wow, judging by the E-fan love last weekend, you're all really digging this season! Thanks to all of you who shared your passion and enthusiasm with myself and the rest of the writers, cast, and crew last weekend. You're all FANTASTIC.

So what's that picture below?

This is Friday night at CAFE DIEM (yup, Syfy turns the restaurant in the Hard Rock Hotel into Cafe Diem all weekend, and it's AWESOME!). Some of the writers and cast of EUREKA had dinner that night. That's Warehouse 13's ALLISON SCAGLIOTTI (a Eureka guest star this season) with JAMES CALLIS (Dr. Charles Grant) and NEIL GRAYSTON (Douglas Fargo). I figured you'd enjoy a picture of them a lot more than me (!).

But there was tons more fun to be had all weekend -- more than I could ever possibly describe here. So I'll let a few more images speak for me, eh? Check out all the fans dressed as Marvel characters. And yes, that's ASGARD (from the new THOR movie) they're posing on.

Oh, and I got to meet one of my movie-making idols, GALE ANNE HURD, who was doing publicity for AMC's upcoming THE WALKING DEAD series. Call it hyperbole if you want, but people... I honestly feel like TWD has the potential to be THE greatest horror TV series OF ALL TIME. Can't wait to see it!!!

Finally, I leave you with FRANKENBERRY. Why? Do you really have to ask? C'mon. It's FRANKENBERRY. How cool is that?
